In order to provide power and connectivity to a UAV, a tethered drone device uses a permanent physical connection in the form of a flexible wire or cable. UAV tether drone systems use quadcopter or other multirotor drones, as well as aerostats, due to the failure of fixed-wing drones to hover. They are used in circumstances where the flight endurance needed is greater than that of the free-flying drone and only a limited area of operation is required.

Usually, drone tethers provide up to a few hundred meters of operating altitude, with the limiting factor being the drone's capacity to accommodate the tether's weight. In order to provide strength, drone tethers can be made of aramid or other lightweight synthetic materials, with copper or plated copper for power conduction and optical fiber for data and communication. The system can be ground-based or based on a vehicle.
