Lidar and UAV data can be used together to generate a virtual outcrop models for the quantitative analysis of the geological entity. Geological structures and fault lines can be traced using the high-resolution DEM. For the identification of the topographic signatures of faults and lineations, high resolution images which are captured by the drones can be used. The beheaded rivers, paleochannels, oxbow lakes, river bends etc. represent abnormal morphology of river system. These features can be traceable using the drone images which are not possible in the images captured by satellites due to very coarse resolution.

A digital outcrop model (DOM) can be developed using drone images. DOM is a digital, 3D representation of an outcrop surface. These models are useful to enhance conventional fieldwork, especially in inaccessible areas. The geological interpretation can be performed on a computer screen. These models can be used to accurately measure different geological features such as the spatial distribution of rock types, orientations, faults, anomalies in river system. The accuracy of the interpretation is highly dependent on the outcrop model resolution.

The use of drones, when coupled with photogrammetry, provide a best way for improved DOM development. This method is less expensive and provide précised results when used in combination with differential GPS.
